Many patients face occasional difficult social or psychological problems in their lives.
Some problems are definitely caused by the actions of other people, but sometimes patients face problems because they simply do not know how to handle a particular kind of problem.
“Cognitive” methods of problem solving are based on patient-physician discussions so the patient is enabled to develop the skills to think clearly about desired solutions.
“Behavioral” methods in medical care are usually based on changing one or two behaviors of the patient, and these are choices made by the patient. Usually, changing one’s own behavior results in setting things up so that other people become more cooperative.
“Therapy” refers to the development of ideas and specific sets of beneficial decisions made during physician visits for the patient to use in resolving their problems.
CBT is useful for many patients. Also, it is financially achievable because it is an integral part of their regular medical care. Frequently, such therapy can be completed in a few months. This program is available to most patients upon request. Of course, complex cases can be referred to additional consultative psychological and psychiatric services.
